KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo volleyball team took down West Virginia Tech in three sets Saturday afternoon for their sixth-straight win and tenth win in their last 11 games. The Cougars are now 23-5 and 12-1 in River States Conference play.
IU Kokomo trailed by one early in the first set, but four consecutive IUK kills gave the Cougars a 9-6 lead. Leading by two at 13-11, the Cougs went on a quick 5-0 run to take an 18-11 lead and force a Golden Bear timeout. IUK went on to win the opening set 25-14.
The Cougars took a quick 3-1 lead to force an early West Virginia Tech timeout. IUK extended their lead to seven by the midway point of the set and were able to cruise to a 25-18 second set win. A 5-0 run from the Golden Bears trimmed the lead to three but the Cougs quickly got back on track to take a two-set lead.
As they did in the second set, IU Kokomo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set to force another early timeout from West Virginia Tech. The Golden Bears managed to come back and take an 8-6 lead, but a timeout allowed the Cougars to regain their strong play.
IU Kokomo built a six-point lead at 20-14, but West Virginia Tech trimmed the IUK lead to two at 22-20 to force a second IUK timeout of the set. The Cougars responded by winning the next three points to win the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0 over the Golden Bears.
Junior
Audrey Strawsma had a match-high 12 kills to lead IUK offensively.
Maggie Connell had eight kills and
Meg Saalfrank added seven. Saalfrank also had a match-high three total blocks.
Allison Richman had 25 assists to lead the Cougs and
Kaley Lyons contributed 16.
Alyvia Smith had a match-high 19 digs while
Ellie Garland had 15.
The Cougars will return to the court Tuesday, October 25th, at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. First serve is set for 7:00 P.M.
