Volleyball Sweeps IU Southeast to Improve to 8-1 in RSC Play

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Kokomo volleyball team swept RSC foe IU Southeast for the second time this season Friday night, this time on the road. The Cougars are now 19-5 overall and 8-1 in River States Conference action.

IU Kokomo led 6-5 in the first set before IU Southeast won eight of the next ten points to take a 13-8 lead and force IUK head coach Heather Hayes to take a timeout. Trailing 19-14, the Cougars won three straight points to trim the lead to two and force a Grenadier timeout.

The Cougs continued their hot play out of the timeout, winning three more points consecutively to take a 20-19 and force IU Southeast to take their final timeout of the set. IU Kokomo won five of the next seven points to take the opening set 25-21.

The Grenadiers opened up an 8-3 lead early in the second set that forced an IUK timeout to regroup. From then on, it was complete domination from the Cougars. IU Kokomo outscored IU Southeast 22-4 over the course of the set to win it 25-12 and take a 2-0 lead.

The strong serving of juniors Tori Wilkinson and Audrey Strawsma played a big part in the second-set turnaround.

IU Kokomo opened set three with momentum, and they led 13-7 at the midway point of the third set. The Cougars led 19-14 in the third, before a 5-0 run behind two Strawsma service ace's put the match on ice. The Cougars won set three 25-15 and the match 3-0 over IU Southeast.

Junior Lorelei Porter had a match-high 14 kills. Audrey Strawsma added seven kills, while leading the team in aces with four.

Freshman setter Allison Richman had a match-high in both assists and blocks, totaling 16 assists and five total blocks. Fellow freshman Lexi Broyles tallied four total blocks.

Alyvia Smith had a match-high 16 digs while Kaley Lyons contributed 12 assists and seven digs.

The Cougars will travel to Owensboro, Kentucky, to take on Brescia tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 P.M.
