NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team dominated IU Southeast from the opening tipoff to earn an 87-62 victory for their second straight win. With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in River States Conference play.
Anya Friend knocked down a jumper on the Cougars opening possession of the game to give IU Kokomo a lead which they would not relinquish. IU Kokomo jumped out to a 10-6 lead over IU Southeast three minutes into the game before Friend and the Cougars caught fire. Friend drilled four triples for 12 points to spur a 19-4 IUK run over the final seven minutes of the first quarter.
The first half of the second quarter was low-scoring thanks to a two and a half minute scoring drought from both teams'. However, the final five minutes of the first half saw the Cougars dominate play and extend their lead to as many as 25 on two separate occasions. IU Kokomo took a 47-22 lead into halftime against IU Southeast.
IU Southeast opened the second half on a 9-0 run to pull within 18 points of IU Kokomo with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter. By the five-minute mark, the Cougars had pushed the lead back to 20 points at 53-33. The Cougars finished the quarter strong, outscoring the Grenadiers by ten to take a 30-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair in which the Grenadiers trimmed the Cougar lead by five. IU Kokomo ultimately controlled throughout to defeat IU Southeast 87-62.
Freshman
Anya Friend set a new career-high in points with 24 and pulled down eight rebounds.
IU Kokomo had three double-digit scorers, led by Friend's 24.
Vanessa Mullins scored 16 while
Sierra Peete added 13 points and seven boards.
The Cougars will have eight days to prepare for their road game against Division II University of Indianapolis on the afternoon of Monday, December 20. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
