GARY, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team took down IU Northwest in four sets on the road Saturday evening. The win extends the Cougars win streak to 14 games and puts an exclamation mark on the regular season. IU Kokomo enters postseason play with an overall record of 25-8, and a 16-1 RSC mark.
The Redhawks opened the match with a quick 5-0 spurt before the Cougars were able to get on the board. Trailing 12-7, IU Kokomo used a 5-0 run of their own to draw even. The Cougars took their first lead of the set at 18-17 after
Morgan Weir and
Erinn Adam combined for a block. IU Kokomo never trailed for the remainder of the set and eventually closed it out 26-24 on a Redhawk attack error.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Redhawks find a groove and steal the set from the Cougars. Leading IU Kokomo 17-16, IU Northwest went on a 5-0 run to open up a 22-16 lead. The Redhawks took the second set 25-21, holding IU Kokomo to a match low .030 hitting percentage.
The Cougars began a set with the lead for the first time on the night as a
Sidney Gerig kill gave the Cougars an early 1-0 advantage in the third set. Leading 5-4, IU Kokomo won seven points in a row to take a commanding 12-5 lead over IU Northwest. The Redhawks cut the lead to two at 16-14 forcing a Cougar timeout, however, the Cougars went on a 9-4 run out of the timeout to close out the third set 25-18.
IU Kokomo dominated the fourth and final set, carrying the momentum over from the strong third-set performance. The Cougars hit for a match-best .343 while holding the Redhawks to a .103 hitting percentage in the final set. Leading 10-8, IU Kokomo used rang off four consecutive points to take a 14-8 lead. A Loralei Porter kill gave the Cougars a 25-14 fourth set victory and a 3-1 win
Erinn Adam led the Cougars with 17 kills while
Lorelei Porter added 13.
Tori Wilkinson had three service aces.
The Cougars will open postseason play by hosting the River States Conference tournament next Friday and Saturday, November 12 & 13, inside the Student Activities and Events Center. IU Kokomo comes into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will play at 9:00 a.m. Friday morning.
