Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hampton Records Double-Double in Men's Basketball Loss to Redhawks

KOKOMO, Ind. - Desean Hampton recorded his second double-double in as many games last night as the senior scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in a 72-64 loss to Indiana University Northwest. In just two games on the season, Hampton is averaging 15 points and just over 10 rebounds per game. The Cougars fall to 1-1 on the season.

A pair of free throws from Trequan Spivey got the Cougars on the board with an early 2-0 lead. Both the Cougars and the Redhawks struggled to find their rythym early, resulting in just 24 combined points being scored through the first 10 minutes of the contest. Trailing by as many as seven in the first 15 minutes, Spivey converted a layup to make cut the IU Kokomo deficit to three points at 20-17. An 8-0 run from the Redhawks extended their lead to 11 points with 3:44 left to play in the opening half. Hampton sent the Cougars into the locker room trailing by eight when he scored a layup as time expired.

IU Kokomo shot just 27 percent in the opening half on 8-of-29 shooting. The Cougars were just 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.

The Cougars came out of the break with a sense of urgency, starting the second half on a 9-2 run to cut the IU Northwest lead to one point. A Spivey triple gave IU Kokomo the lead at the 12:52 mark and Noah Harris scored on the Cougars' next possession to extend the lead to three points.

A three from the Redhawks' Brian Hernandez gave IU Northwest the lead back with 11:24 to play. The Cougars found themselves playing from behind for the duration of the contest. IU Kokomo was able to tie the game on multiple occasions but unable to regain the lead. Hampton scored 16 of his game-high 20 in the second half.

Offensively, the Cougars were much more efficient during the second 20 minutes, shooting 53 percent from the field. IU Kokomo struggled again from long distance, hitting just two of their nine attempts in the second half.

Spivey and Harris each finished with 10 points. The 10 points from Harris is a career high for the freshman.

The Cougars will return to action on Friday as they host Governors State University at the Student Activities and Events Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
