Four in Double Figures As Men's Basketball Slips Past Jaguars

KOKOMO, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season on the heels of four double-figure scoring performance to lift them past the Governors State Jaguars, 65-58. Despite shooting just 27 percent from the field, the Cougars got stops on the defensive end when they needed them against the Jaguars. The Cougars made 30 free throws in the win, 15 of them coming from Trequan Spivey who finished with a team-high 17 points.

Desean Hampton turned in videogame-like numbers on Friday evening as the senior scored 10 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, and blocked seven shots. Hampton has no recorded a double-double in all three IU Kokomo games this season. The Speedway, Indiana native is averaging 13.3 points and 13.7 rebounds per game.

The other Cougars in double figures were Hunter White who finished with 13 and Hunter Jackson who came off the bench to score 11 points in the win.

IU Kokomo found themselves trailing 11-2 through the first six minute of the game but a 14-5 run over the next four minutes brought the game back to even at 16 apiece. The Cougars offense found its groove over the final six minute of the opening half, using a 13-5 to take the 31-30 lead heading into halftime.

The second half started with each team trading baskets until things were knotted at 39. Spivey drew a foul while attempting a three-pointer and drained all three foul shots to give the Cougars the three point advantage. Once again, Spivey was at the free throw line and drained two more to give IUK a 10 point lead with 4:55 left to play, their largest lead of the game.

When it looked as if the Cougars may pull away, the Jaguars clawed back, going on a 12-4 run, cutting their deficit to just two points with 35 seconds left to play in the game. But Spivey remained perfect from the charity stripe, knocking down his final six attempts to keep in the Cougars in front.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday as they host Taylor University at the Student Activities & Events Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
