KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team extended its winning streak to 13 matches on Tuesday night as the Cougars handled the Oakland City Mighty Oaks with ease. IUK cruised to a 3-0 sweep to finish the River States Conference regular season with a 16-1 mark.
Erinn Adam, who was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Defender of the week earlier today, showed her versatility as she was efficient and effective on the offensive side this evening. Adam posted a school record hitting percentage in a three-set match, hitting .923 with 12 kills on 13 swings with no errors. The Cougars hit .345 as a team in the victory.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first set, the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to take an early lead. Oakland City called its first timeout, trailing 7-2. Out of the timeout, IUK went on an 8-2 run to extend its lead to 15-4, forcing the Mighty Oaks to take their second and final timeout of the first set. The Cougars would go on to win the set 25-11.
The Cougars are 22-1 on the season when winning the first set.
In the early parts of the second set, both teams traded points, but an 11-4 run turned a 6-5 IUK lead into a 17-9 advantage. Adam ended the set with a kill off an overpass from the Mighty Oaks to give IU Kokomo a 2-0 match advantage.
A fast start by the Cougars was the difference in the third and final set. IUK sprinted out to a 9-3 lead forcing an Oakland City timeout. The Cougars never looked back on their way to a 25-14 victory and their 18th sweep of the season.
IU Kokomo will conclude its regular season on Saturday as they travel to Gary, Indiana to take in the IU Northwest Redhawks.
The Cougars will then return home next Friday and Saturday as they host the River States Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed.
