Cougars Sweep Midway; Clinch Outright River States Conference Title and NAIA Tournament Bid

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's volleyball team knocked off Midway in straight sets Saturday, avenging their lone conference loss on the year. The win gives IU Kokomo their fifth River States Conference regular season title and seventh straight NAIA National Tournament bid. The Cougars improved to 23-8 overall, and 15-1 in River States Conference play.

Sidney Gerig led the Cougar offensive attack with nine kills while Erinn Adam and Morgan Weir each added six. Kaley Lyons led IU Kokomo with 17 assists. Weir led the Cougars with four service aces.

Midway opened the match by winning the first two points, however the Cougars were able to bounce back and keep the set tight until finding their groove. Trailing 20-17, IU Kokomo reeled off seven straight points to take a 24-20 lead late in the set. An Eagle kill cut the lead to three, but the Cougars would clinch the opening set 25-21 on ensuing point.

IU Kokomo dominated the second set, hitting for a whopping .320 while limiting Midway to a -.032 hitting percentage. Leading by one early in the set, the duo of Erinn Adam and Sidney Gerig had blocks on consecutive points, energizing the Cougar bench and home-crowd. The Cougars led comfortably for the remainder of the set, winning it 25-13.

The third set was back and forth to begin. Trailing 9-8, the Cougars went on a 5-0 spurt to take a 13-9 lead. Then, leading by two at 15-13, IU Kokomo would end the set with a 10-3 run to close out Midway 25-16.

With today's victory, IU Kokomo clinched their fifth RSC regular season title, the number 1 seed in the conference tournament, and their seventh straight NAIA National Tournament appearance. IU Kokomo will host the entire River States Conference tournament.

The Cougars will return to the court Tuesday, November 2, as they welcome Oakland City University to the Student Activities and Events Center. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
