Volleyball Beats IU Southeast 3-1, Pushes Win Streak to 11

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team made it 11 straight wins on Friday night with a 3-1 victory over IU Southeast at the Student Activities and Events Center. The win improves the Cougars to 22-8 overall, and 14-1 in River States Conference play.

Sidney Gerig led the Cougars offensive attack with 20 kills while Erinn Adam had 15. Kaley Lyons paced the Cougars with 27 assists, with Kendal Williams adding 18. Alyvia Smith led the team with 21 digs.

In the first set, IU Kokomo dropped the opening point before going on an 8-0 run fueled by four kills from Sidney Gerig. The Cougars were forced to take a timeout while leading 20-15; however the lead would not drop below four for the remainder of the set, with a Gerig kill capping off the set, 25-21.

Leading 6-5 in the second set, the Cougars went on a 4-0 spurt to grow the lead to 10-5 and distance themselves from the Grenadiers. An Erinn Adam kill forced a timeout with the Cougars leading 14-8. The remainder of the set was back and forth with IU Kokomo controlling throughout and taking the set 25-15.

The Grenadiers went on a 6-0 run with the score tied at three, to make it 9-3 IU Southeast. Trailing by as many as eight, the Cougars cut the lead to five at 21-16, forcing IU Southeast to take a timeout. The Grenadiers finished the set strong however and took the third 25-21.

IU Kokomo began the fourth set with a spark, winning the first four points behind three Cougar kills and a Grenadier attack error. IU Southeast took a timeout while trailing 8-2 in hopes to stop the bleeding, however the Cougars ended the set on a 17-4 run to make it 25-6. The Cougars hit for a match-high .297 while holding IU Southeast to a -.243 hitting percentage.

The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Midway University. IU Kokomo comes into this matchup with extra motivation, as the Eagles are responsible for the Cougars lone conference loss. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
