Cougars Earn Golden Goal Victory to Set Program Record for Conference Wins

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – Mackenzie Gibbons netted the golden goal in the third minute of the second overtime period, giving the Indiana University Kokomo soccer team a 2-1 victory over Ohio Christian. With the win, the Cougars have set a program record for conference wins in a season. The win improves the Cougars record to 5-8-2 overall and 5-4-1 in River States Conference play.

Ohio Christian struck first with a goal in the second minute of the match from Karissa Buttelwerth. Jamie Long assisted on the goal for the Trailblazers. In the 42nd minute of the match, Ohio Christian player Sofie Galiffo was issued a red card, forcing Ohio Christian to play down a player for the remainder of the match.

The Cougars found the equalizer in the 79th minute on a goal from Andi Williams. The goal, Williams' first of the season, was assisted by Morgan Scruggs. The match remained tied throughout regulation, forcing overtime.

The first overtime saw two shots total, both coming from the Cougars, and the score remained tied at one after the first overtime period.

In the third minute of the second overtime period, Mackenzie Gibbons scored the golden goal to lift IU Kokomo over Ohio Christian. Gibbons's goal is just her second of the season and comes a week after she tallied her first goal of the year.

Morgan Scruggs led the Cougar attack with an assist and nine shots, including four on goal. Hoopingarner and Gibbons each notched a goal and had three shots on goal apiece.

After setting a record for conference wins in a season, here is what head coach Sohaila Akhavein had to say postgame today: "This team has come a long way from the start of this season. I am so proud of their resilience today. These ladies have so much heart, desire, and pride and I can't wait to see their continued success. This is a big program victory, but there is more to come."

The Cougars will return to the pitch for their final regular season matchup Thursday, October 28, as they travel to Kentucky to take on Midway University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
