BECKLEY, WV – A balanced attack led the Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team to its eighth straight win on Friday night as the Cougars earned a 3-0 sweep over the host, West Virginia Tech Golden Bears. IU Kokomo moves to 19-8 overall and 11-1 in River States Conference action and currently hold a one match lead in the West Division with six matches to play.
Sidney Gerig had a match-high eight kills while
Erinn Adam led the way, hitting .875, with seven kills in eight attempts.
In the opening set, the Cougars took an early 2-1 lead on a kill from Adam and never looked back, holding the Golden Bears to just 11 points and a -0.100 attack percentage.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the second set to jump out to a 5-0 advantage. A kill from
Morgan Weir and a block from
Audrey Strawsma and Adam gave IU Kokomo a 10-2 lead. With the score 18-10, the Cougars finished with seven straight points to take the set, 25-10, and 2-0 advantage in the match.
The final set turned out to be the most competitive as the Golden Bears scored 20 points and led for much of the early part of the set.
Kaley Lyons recorded a service ace to tie the set at nine and spark a 5-0 Cougar run, giving IUK a 13-9 lead. WVU Tech battled back and eventually evened the set at 18 but a 7-2 spurt from the Cougars closed out the match. IU Kokomo earned its 14th sweep of the season with the 3-0 victory over the Golden Bears.
Lyons finished the night with 18 assists while
Kendal Williams added 16.
The Cougars will be back in action this afternoon as they take on Rio Grande at 12:00 p.m.
