Volleyball Sweeps Pioneers to Start Five Match Homestand

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball program earned their fifth River States Conference victory of the season on Friday night as the Cougars swept Point Park University at the Student Activities and Events Center. IUK is now 13-8 overall on the season and 5-1 in league play.

The Cougars attack was in sync against the Pioneers, hitting .250 with 42 kills and 14 errors in 112 total attempts.

Point Park did not have an answer for IUK middle hitter, Erinn Adam. The fifth-year senior finished the match with 15 kills in 22 attempts, and no attack errors, hitting .682 on the night. Jocelyn Hack was a big part of the Cougar offense as the sophomore hit .667 with seven kills and just one attack error in nine attempts. Audrey Strawsma also finished with seven kills.

IU Kokomo got out to a fast start in the opening set, building an 11-4 advantage that included five consecutive points, forcing a Pioneer timeout. The Cougars scored two more points out of the timeout to push their run to 7-0, making it 13-4. IUK eventually extended its lead to 20-9 and it looked as if the first set was soon to be in the Cougars' rearview mirror. However, Point Park managed to put together a 9-3 run to cut the IUK lead to just six points, resulting in an IU Kokomo timeout. A kill from Adam and Lorelei Porter eventually ended the set with the Cougars winning 25-19.

In the middle set, the Cougars once again started fast, building a quick 9-2 lead. Just as they did in the opening set, IUK built a 20-9 advntage but this time did not let the Pioneers back in, outscoring Point Park 5-2 to close out the set and take a commanding 2-0 match lead.

IU Kokomo trailed for the first time in the entire match to start the third as the Pioneers struck first taking a 1-0 lead. With the set even at seven, the Cougars rattled off five straight points to take a 12-7 edge. IU Kokomo would never trail again, winning the third set to complete the 3-0 sweep of the Pioneers.

The Cougars are winners of three straight over the Pioneers and five of the last six.

IU Kokomo will welcome Carlow University to the Student Activities and Events Center tomorrow as the Celtics look avoid losing 10 straight to the Cougars. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m. and all the action can be seen live on the IU Kokomo Sports Network
