Baseball Returns to Win Column Behind Dominant Pitching and Timely Hitting

KOKOMO, Ind. - IU Kokomo used timely hitting and strong pitching to take down UNOH 4-1 Tuesday afternoon. A go-ahead fourth inning and a two-RBI triple in the seventh, combined with shutdown work from the bullpen powered the Cougars to the win.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The pitching spectacles began early for IU Kokomo, as freshmen right-hander Jacob Forson escaped the frame scoreless despite walking two and hitting a third, all thanks to timely ground balls and stellar defense behind him. 
  • However, in the second inning, the Racers would scratch across a run after a another pair of walks and back to back errors in the outfield. That would end Forson's day as he would pass the torch to Cam Howard, who left the bases juiced as he induced to infield pop-ups to the first two batters he faced. 
  • Howard would cruise from there, as he would throw the next four frames and keep the Racers. bats silenced, allowing only four base runners. 
  • The Cougar offense provided support to their staff in the home half of the fourth, as Corbin Napier led off the frame with a triple down the right field line, and would come in to score thanks to a Nate Olsen poke into center. A couple batters later, with two outs, Caden Whitehead shot a ball through the right side that would put runners on the corners for Nate Montgomery, who would drive one past the second baseman to give IU Kokomo a 2-1 lead headed into the fifth. 
  • After a 1-2-3 inning from junior Drew Youmans, the Cougar offense came back for a couple more. After two quick outs, Noah Wolf drew a walk and quickly stole second and third base. Brock Taulman followed suit by drawing a walk of his own and stealing second, and both would be driven in as Rodney Rachel tripled to the right center gap, making the lead 4-1. 
  • Owen Norris came in for the six-out save, as he faced just seven batters across those two innings, securing the victory for the Cougars.
