THE RUNDOWN
  • West Virginia Tech got the scoring started in the home half of the first inning, as they put up a three spot in their first at-bat of the game.
  • The Cougars responded in the third inning as Luke Hanson led the inning off with a single up the middle. Jedvier Garcia followed him with a single of his own, and both runners scored as Noah Wolf tripled to the right center gap. A couple batters later, Wolf came home to score and tie the game on a Payton Hankins RBI ground out.
  • IU Kokomo's offense stayed hot in the next inning. With two outs, and Jedvier Garcia on, Noah Wolf drew a walk, and Nate Montgomery knocked both runners in with a triple to the right center gap. Rodney Rachel then brought Montgomery home with a triple of his own to the right center gap, increasing the Cougar lead to 6-3.
  • WVU Tech would respond in bottom half of the inning, plating a pair from a solo home run and back to back double with two outs.
  • The score would hold until the top of the seventh. Payton Hankins would lead off the inning with a single up the middle, would move to second on a sac bunt from Brock Taulman, and move to third a batter later. Max French would then slap a pinch hit, RBI single into left field on the first pitch he saw to extend the Cougar lead to 7-5.
  • In the eighth, the offense would get right back to work. Luke Hanson led off with a walk, and Jedvier Garcia followed with a double to right center. Both would come around to score a batter later as Noah Wolf smoked a single up the middle, giving IUK a 9-5 advantage.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, the Golden Bears would knot things up at nine with an RBI double, and a three run home run to give us a new game. After both sides went down quietly in the ninth, there was free baseball to be had in the Appalachians.
  • In the top of the 10th, Nate Montgomery led off with a single, and had Jack Taulman run for him. Rodney Rachel walked, and the two runners moved up 90 feet apiece on a sac bunt from Payton Hankins. After Brock Taulman was put on, Corbin Napier hit a ground ball to the shortstop that got thrown away going for the double play, allowing Taulman and Rachel to score, giving the Cougars an 11-9 lead.
  • Unfortunately, the Golden Bear offense would once again respond, as they won in walk off fashion behind a hit by pitch, single, 2-RBI double, and an RBI single to win 12-11.
