HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team opened its four-game weekend in Mississippi on Friday with a pair of matchups against top-15 opponents, No. 12 Missouri Baptist and No. 11 William Carey. Despite holding a lead through three innings against the 11th-ranked Crusaders, the Cougars dropped both contests to begin the trip.

THE RUNDOWNÂ
- #12 Missouri Baptist scored the first five runs of the game before the Cougars found the scoreboard in the fourth, hanging a crooked number.Â
- Anthony Nino led off the fourth with a one-out single, and Jedvier Garcia followed by drawing a walk. Courtesy runner Jude Ruddy and Garcia later came around to score on a one-out triple, and Riley Sands came through with a productive groundout to second that brought Napier home, trimming the deficit to 5-3.
- Those three runs marked the only scoring of game one for IU Kokomo, as the Spartans answered with a five-run fifth inning and pulled away from there.
LEADING THE CHARGE
- IU Kokomo out-hit the 12th-ranked Spartans 9-7 in Friday's matchup. Offensively, the Cougars were paced by multi-hit performances from Payton Hankins and Corbin Napier, as Napier tallied a triple and a single, driving in two runs and scoring once, while Hankins added a pair of singles.
- In his IU Kokomo debut, Riley Sands delivered his first hit and RBI as a Cougar with an RBI single. Jedvier Garcia also contributed with a single and an RBI, while adding a walk.
- Bradyn Douglas, Max French, and Anthony Nino accounted for IU Kokomo's three remaining hits.

THE RUNDOWNÂ
- No. 11 William Carey plated its only run off IU Kokomo starter Alec Murphy in the opening inning, capitalizing on a pair of walks and a base hit before bringing a run home on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Cougars answered right away in the top of the second, as their first three hitters reached base safely. Max French drew a walk, Rodney Rachel was hit by a pitch, and graduate student catcher Luke Hanson singled to right, loading the bases with one out. Riley Sands and Noah Wolf each delivered productive 4-3 RBI groundouts, giving IU Kokomo a 2-1 lead, their first of the weekend.
- IU Kokomo added another run in the top of the third after Murphy escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second. Payton Hankins led off the frame with a single to center, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Max French.
- The Crusaders evened the score in the fourth with two runs on two hits, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk, then added another two-run inning in the fifth to reclaim a 5-3 lead with four frames remaining.
- After a scoreless sixth inning from both teams, William Carey added an unearned run in the seventh. IU Kokomo responded with an unearned run in the eighth, cutting the deficit to 6-4 with three outs remaining.
- William Carey added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and then navigated around two walks in the ninth to secure a 7-4 victory over IU Kokomo.
LEADING THE CHARGE
- Alec Murphy worked out of trouble time and again across three innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three. Despite issuing five walks, he limited the damage and exited with the lead intact.
- Max French was one of four Cougars to combine a hit with a free pass, also driving in a run via sacrifice fly. Payton Hankins, Jedvier Garcia, and Luke Hanson each added a hit and a walk of their own.
- Cameron Heaney delivered a strong relief outing, pitching 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just one earned run on a hit and a walk while striking out two.
