KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The IU Kokomo men's cross country team continued its historic stretch Friday at the NAIA Appalachian Challenge, finishing sixth among 24 teams while establishing three school records for the second consecutive week.
Coming off a record-breaking performance at the Bradley Pink Classic just one week earlier, the Cougars once again raised the bar, setting new program standards in individual 8K time, team total time and team average time.
Karter Jackson led the charge with a 24th-place finish in 25:03.98, breaking his own school record by nearly 10 seconds. The sophomore now owns the fastest 8K time in program history and remains the program's top all-time performer.
Drew Lovelace followed in 38th place with a personal-best time of 25:22.49, improving by 14 seconds and moving into second on the program's all-time performer list and third on the all-time times list. Steven Case was close behind in 40th, clocking a personal-best 25:26.48 to improve by 24 seconds and rank third among all-time performers and fourth in program history.
Daylen Schrock placed 53rd with a time of 25:47.55, shaving 27 seconds off his previous best while moving into fourth among all-time performers and sixth on the all-time times list. Rudy Bowman rounded out IU Kokomo's scoring five in 67th place, recording a 36-second personal best of 26:05.25 that ranks sixth among all-time performers and ninth on the all-time times list.
Together, the Cougars' top five combined for a team total time of 2:07:45.75 and an average of 25:33.15, both new school records. The total time improved upon last week's record by nearly two minutes and the previous program standard entering this season by more than five minutes. The average time was approximately 20 seconds faster than last week's record and more than a minute better than the previous mark entering the year.
The record-setting performances extended throughout the lineup, with Charlie Conkle (27:08.48), Ayden Potts (27:10.73), Jacob Bumgardner (27:12.99), Jaxsen Muncie (27:34.99) and Magnus Thorstenson (28:03.49) all recording personal bests.
"Wow, what can I say, it was an historic day for our men's team. Our top 5 guys ran out of their minds for the 2nd week in a row. I was a bit nervous that we had our best race last week but they said hold our Powerade. Aden Pierce unfortunately had to drop otherwise I believe he runs in the mid 25's so hopefully he will be ready in two weeks. We will take it day by day with him. Ayden Potts, Charlie Conkle, Jacob Bumgardner, Jaxsen Muncie, and Magnus Thorstenson do not always make the headlines or the quotes but I am very proud of them today! Rudy Bowman was a huge difference maker for us, he has stepped up! We will be happy but we have work to do if we are going to be able to do anything at conference as a team and as individuals. None of this will mean anything if we cannot keep this rolling." — Head Coach Josh Colvin
IU Kokomo will now turn its attention to the River States Conference Championships in two weeks.
