Cougars Cruise Past Midway 4-0 for Second Straight Conference Victory

MIDWAY, Ky. - The IU Kokomo women's soccer team continued its winning ways Thursday evening, using three first-half goals and a dominant offensive performance to shut out Midway University 4-0 for its second consecutive River States Conference victory.

The Cougars controlled the match from the opening minutes, scoring three goals in a span of just over five minutes to seize command early. IU Kokomo finished with a commanding 25-9 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 edge in shots on goal, while four different Cougars found the back of the net.

Thursday's victory marked the second straight match in which IU Kokomo scored at least four goals and put 14 shots on target. The shutout was also the first of the season for the Cougars, who improved to 3-7-2 overall and 2-1-1 in RSC play.

First Half

  • After goalkeeper Liz Godfrey turned away an early Midway opportunity, the Cougars quickly established themselves offensively, generating several scoring chances before Kaiya Money broke through in the 10th minute to open the scoring.
  • IU Kokomo wasted little time doubling its advantage, as freshman Kaitlyn Swartzendruber found the back of the net in the 14th minute for her fourth goal in the last two matches.
  • Just 100 seconds later, Charity Lewis connected with Hannah Hermansen, who buried her first goal of the season to extend the Cougar lead to 3-0 less than 15 minutes into the contest.
  • The Cougars continued applying pressure throughout the remainder of the half, with Addison Waller and Madison Balf each rattling the crossbar as IU Kokomo carried its three-goal advantage into the break.

Second Half
  • IU Kokomo picked up right where it left off, peppering the Midway defense with nine shots in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Eagles goalkeeper Lillian Klee was forced into four saves during a particularly active stretch.
  • The Cougars broke through once again in the 61st minute following an impressive sequence of passes. Swartzendruber played the ball back to Balf, who found Anna Burns making a run into the box. Burns beat the Midway goalkeeper to net her first goal of the season, with both Balf and Swartzendruber credited with assists.
  • Midway looked to respond with a pair of opportunities, including an attempt that struck the crossbar, but the Cougar defense held firm to preserve the four-goal cushion.
  • The Eagles generated several late chances, but Godfrey came up with two additional saves down the stretch to complete the shutout and secure IU Kokomo's second consecutive conference win.
