Duncan Claims Shot Put Victory Over 26 Division I Competitors; Cougars Split Between Two In-State Meets

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind./UPLAND, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's indoor track and field team competed in another split-squad weekend inside the Hoosier State Friday and Saturday ahead of an impending snowstorm that began dumping snow across the area Saturday evening.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Fresh off punching her ticket to the NAIA Indoor National Championships in the shot put and weight throw last weekend, Sydney Duncan topped 26 NCAA Division I competitors to win the shot put against a strong field at the Crossroads of America Invitational, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Her toss extended her lead in both the conference and the nation, marking a season-best performance.
  • Duncan also finished ninth in the weight throw behind seven Division I competitors, defeating 16 DI throwers while finishing as the second-highest NAIA student-athlete in the event. She remains ranked No. 1 in the River States Conference and No. 3 nationally in the weight throw.
  • Mia Bustos and Faith Rock also topped several Division I competitors in the shot put Saturday in Indianapolis, as Bustos finished 13th with a mark of 12.75 meters and Rock followed in 16th with a throw of 12.38 meters. With her performance, Bustos moved to third all-time in program history.
  • Senior Leslie Sprankles made the most of the split-squad weekend, turning in strong performances at both meets. Sprankles finished ninth in the 600 meters Friday at the Crossroads of America Invitational as the top NAIA finisher, then turned around Saturday at Taylor to place second in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:07.73, ranking second in the conference and 30th in the NAIA.
  • Mia Castillo turned in a personal-best time of 8.37 seconds in the 60 meters, moving her to third all-time in program history in the event.
  • Alysha Crouch won the 5,000 meters Saturday at Taylor with a personal-best time of 19:54.32, placing her fifth-fastest in program history.
  • Erica Grubbs finished fourth in the 1,000 meters at Taylor with a personal-best time of 3:16.95, marking the fourth-fastest in program history.

THE ROAD AHEAD 
  • The Cougars return to action next Saturday for another split-squad weekend, competing at the University of Louisville (PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational) and Olivet Nazarene University (ONU Indoor Invitational).
