RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The Cougars last River States Conferece series opener of the season featured a multitude of runs on both sides of the scoreboard, as the IUK and Rio Grande squads combined for 26 runs in Thursday's contest. This is the Cougar's fourth loss in their last five games, after they had won nine of ten before this stretch.
The scoring started early, as expected in a match up like this, as Rio Grande plated a run in the home half of the first. The Cougars responded in the next half inning, as
Luke Hanson brought
Payton Hankins in to score on a sacrifice fly.
The Red torm took the lead back with a two run blast in the second, and extended their lead to five with another trio of runs in the third inning.
IUK cut into the lead in the top of the fourth, starting with
Noah Wolf singling home
Brayden Coffey. The Cougar squad added another two runs off a pair of sacrifice flies, with
Gavin Smith scoring
Judah Hennessy (CR) before
Noah Wolf came around to score on a fly out from
Mason Janz to cut the deficit to two.
The RedStorm bats responded in a big way after that, scoring five runs over the next two innings, extending their lead to 11-4.
The Cougar bats chewed away at the deficit in a big way in the sixth inning, scoring five runs of their own.
Alex Janke got things started with a single on which Hennessy scored via a Red Storm error. Janz followed later in the frame with an RBI single, scoring Wolf.
Kasey Ross picked up his first RBI of the day later in the inning on a ground out that scored Janke from third. The final tallies came off the bat of
Payton Hankins, as he scored
Jacob Medvescek and Janz with a double to the centerfield wall.
Rio Grande tacked on two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to four.
Kasey Ross responded with a big two-run shot, bringing
Gavin Smith around to score with him, as the lead was cut to two headed to the bottom half.
The RedStorm added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make the lead three before the Cougar bats started to put together a comeback in the top of the ninth.
Alex Janke singled home
Brayden Coffey to trim the RedStorm lead to two, yet Rio Grande's bullpen shut down the Cougar bats, stranding the bases loaded to end the game.
