KOKOMO, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo Baseball team dropped their third-straight contest Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-3 to the Knights of Marian University (Ind.). The Cougars split the season series with the Knights, with each team winning away from their home field.
Tuesday's contest was a bullpen day for both pitching staffs, with IUK utilizing six pitchers and Marian employing a new arm every inning.
Marian opened the scoring quickly in the top of the first, scoring a singular run on a sacrifice fly. The Cougars responded in the bottom half of the inning, as
Kasey Ross knocked in
Mason Janz and
Gavin Smith with a single through the right side for IU Kokomo's only lead on the day.
The Knights tied the game with another tally in the second before taking the lead for good in the third with another pair of runs. Marian then added another two runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-2.
In his first game since the series finale against Shawnee State on March 9,
Mike Talesky led of the top of the sixth with a pinch-hit double. He was immediately followed up by another double from
Kasey Ross, plating Talesky and giving Ross three RBI's for the game.
Marian would add another insurance run a half inning later to extend the score to what would eventually be the final, 7-3.
Pitching Notables:
- Freshman Kaleb Shelton got the nod for his first career start, giving up four runs and punching out three runs in two and a third innings.
- Jack Bruington came on in relief tossing two and a third innings himself, surrendering two runs and striking out another three Knights.
- Dylan Bryant was next up out of the pen for the Cougars, relieving Bruington in the fifth. He tossed an inning and a third scoreless innings.
- AJ Burkhalter was on for the seventh inning, giving up one run while striking out one Marian hitter.
- Senior Nathan Stanley came in for the eighth inning, tossing a scoreless frame.
- Mason Janz entered from left field for his season debut on the mound in the top of the ninth, striking out two Knights in a scoreless inning of work.
The Cougars continue their gauntlet with four games in the next three days, all on the road. They will first head to Fort Wayne tomorrow for the second game of the season against Indiana Tech.
On Thursday, IU Kokomo will to Rio Grande for their final series in River States Conference play. The Cougars are currently sitting in a tie for third in the RSC standings, and need to finish at least sixth to head to Chillicothe for the conference tournament.
The Cougars will return home for a doubleheader against Miami-Hamilton (OH) on April 25 for their final pair of home games, with the 2025 senior class to be honored prior to first pitch.
