Huiner Tosses Complete-Game Shutout as Baseball Cruises to 11-0 Run-Rule Victory Over WVU Tech Friday

KOKOMO, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo Baseball team returned to the win column with a dominant effort from start to finish Friday afternoon, blanking WVU Tech en-route to an 11-0 (7 innings) run-rule win in the series opener.

Junior LHP Brett Huiner continued his string of series opening starts Friday against WVU Tech, tossing a complete-game shutout to improve to 2-1 on the season. Huiner tossed all seven innings, surrendering three hits and three walks while striking out six.

IU Kokomo's 11 runs came in clumps, as the Cougars enjoyed big second, third, and fifth innings in their second River States Conference victory of the season.

The Cougars found the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, hanging a three-spot for an early lead. Three straight Cougs reached base via free pass to open the inning, leading to the crooked number.

Noah Wolf grounded into a fielder's choice to score Gavin Smith (BB), before Jacob Medvescek came through two batters later, scoring Vince Alvarez (BB). With two outs in the inning, Mason Janz singled to left, scoring Alex Janke (BB) to close the second with a 3-0 lead.

IU Kokomo added on with four more runs in the home-half of the third, as the first three reached base safely to open the inning once again. Anthony Nino singled through the left side to score Gavin Smith (1B). As Alvarez stole third, a throwing error by the catcher allowed him to score, making it 5-0 with just one out in the inning.

Janke tripled to centerfield two batters later on a ball that was lost in the sun, scoring Nino's courtesy runner Garrett Lupoi. The final run of the frame came on a two-RBI double off the bat of Jacob Medvescek, one of his five RBI on the day.

Holding a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars would add four more runs to push the game into run-rule territory. Medvescek hit Janz went back-to-back bombs in the inning, as Medvescek rode the wind to dead centerfield for a three-run jack before Janz followed with a solo-shot to left.

The Cougars will return to action at Kokomo Municipal Stadium Saturday afternoon, closing out the weekend series against the Golden Bears with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM ET.
