KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo Women's Basketball trailed by 14 at the half Tuesday, mounting a furious second half comeback bid that came up short in a 56-44 loss to IU Southeast.
The opening quarter started similarly to the men's game, as there were just four total points in the opening five minutes of the game. IU Southeast carried a narrow four-point lead into the second quarter.
After
Hannah Hodgen knocked down a pair at the free-throw line to pull the Cougars within two, the Grenadiers utilized a 14-0 run to extend the lead to 16 with 3:47 remaining in the first half. IU Southeast led 30-16 through 20 minutes.
Trailing 32-18 early in the third, Head Coach Lisa Pflueger's squad scored 11-straight to trim the deficit to three and make it a ballgame once again, seemingly out of nowhere.
IU Kokomo managed to pull within a point of the Grenadiers twice in the period, but were unable to get over the hump, trailing 43-37 heading into the fourth after a last second triple for IU Southeast.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the fourth to trail by a point once again, as
Mackenzie York hit a pair of free throws and
Mia Catey completed an old-fashioned three-point play.
IU Southeast was not done yet however, rebuilding the lead to double-digits at 54-44 with 4:02 to play. Neither team would score for the next three minutes and 28 seconds, as the Grenadiers closed out a 56-44 road win over IU Kokomo.
Four different Cougars played 30+ minutes on the night, with
Mackenzie York leading the way offensively. York, a Western High School product, scored a team-high 12 points while going 8-8 for at the charity stripe, all while grabbing four rebounds and three assists.
Mia Catey was the lone other Cougar in double-figures, recording 11 points and eight rebounds.
Anna Kiser and
Hannah Hodgen each crashed the glass well in the loss, as Kiser recorded eight rebounds and Hodgen pulled down seven.
The Cougars will next be in action Saturday, as they will hit the road to battle Midway Saturday at 3:00 PM.
