Cougars Cruise to Neutral-Site Win Over Johnson (Tenn.) Behind Big Performances from Annan Jr. and Matson

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball set the tone early in Tennessee on Saturday night, racing out to a 25-point halftime lead and securing a 17-point neutral-site win over Johnson University.

THE RUNDOWN
  • After a nine-day layoff, IU Kokomo came out with a vengeance Saturday night, tipping off one of the final games of the weekend at The Show. The Cougars limited Johnson to just 35% shooting from the field while connecting on 65% of their own attempts, building a 25-point lead by halftime.
  • Alonzo Clawson-Smith opened the second half with a triple to extend IU Kokomo's lead to 28, but Johnson outscored the Cougars in the second half after struggling offensively in the first.
  • The IU Kokomo lead stayed above 15 until the 7:58 mark of the second half. Johnson got as close as 11 points several times in the final minutes, but the Cougars never let the Royals get within single digits, securing an 89-72 victory to improve to 4-2 on the season.

LEADING THE CHARGE
  • Upperclassman forward Joseph Annan Jr. and freshman guard Patric Matson powered IU Kokomo to the win, as Annan Jr. delivered a career-high 27 points with 10 rebounds and Matson added a career-best 26 points.
  • Evan Kretz drilled three triples on his way to 11 points and six rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Jake McGraw chipped in a career-high 10 points in 23 minutes off the bench.

INSIDE THE HUDDLE
  • "I thought our guys came out of the gate strong to begin the game, especially considering our two week layoff. We lost our defensive intensity in the second half and allowed them to climb back into the game. We need to work towards the consistency to put 40 minutes together. Great learning experience for our young team! " - Head Coach Eric Echelbarger
