RICHMOND, Ind. - The IU Kokomo volleyball team took their talents to Richmond Friday night to take on the rival Red Wolves of IU East. The Cougars were victorious in straight-sets, earning their sixth-consecutive win to improve to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in River States Conference action.
IU Kokomo opened the match strong, however IU East would recover to take their first lead of the night at 8-7. The Cougars immediately responded though, utilizing a 4-0 spurt to lead by three.
Heather Hayes's squad narrowly kept their neck in front until the Red Wolves knotted the score at 18 apiece. IUK then won six of the next seven points for a handful of set points, eventually closing out a 25-22 first-set win with a
Mya Grigsby kill.
The Cougs hit for a whopping .552% as a team in set two, compared to a dismal .088% for the Red Wolves thanks to strong defensive play. As you would expect with those numbers, IU Kokomo cruised to a 25-13 set-two win and a 2-0 lead.
IU East saved their best volleyball of the night for the early parts of set three, as they took a 14-11 lead, forcing an IUK timeout. Trailing 19-15, the Cougars won four-straight points and 10 of the ensuing 12 to earn a come-from-behind third-set victory and sweep of the Red Wolves.
Mya Grigsby and
Lexi Broyles led IU Kokomo in kills with 13 and 12 respectively. Grigsby also had a team-high 10 digs for yet another double-double.
Cali Cummings had a match-high three blocks while
Alexis Baney stuffed a pair.
IU Kokomo's two setters combined for 37 assists, with
Kaley Lyons recording 20 and
Allison Richman totaling 17.
The Cougars will return home to host IU Southeast next Thursday at 7:00 PM.
