Tennis Beats Shawnee State in RSC Quarterfinals, Falls to Oakland City in Semifinal Match to Close Season

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's tennis team competed in the River States Conference Championship Thursday, knocking off Shawnee State in a quarterfinal match before falling to Oakland City in the semifinals to close out the 2023-2024 season.

The 2024 RSC Championships were held at Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansville, Indiana.

RSC Quarterfinal Match vs Shawnee State (4-0 Win)

IU Kokomo got off to a strong start in Thursday's quarterfinal match, earning the doubles point for a 1-0 lead prior to the beginning of singles play. Having won the #3 doubles point via walkover, the Cougars needed just one win at either #1 or #2 doubles to clinch the point.

The #2 doubles duo of Ava Allen and Chloe Schmidt would take care of business, winning 6-4 to earn the first point of the match for IUK.

Just as they did at #3 doubles, IU Kokomo won #6 singles via walkover, therefore needing to win just two of the remaining five singles matches in order to advance to the semifinals.

Reiley Hiser and Chloe Schmidt, playing #4 and #5 singles respectively for the Cougars, took care of business. The two dropped a combined six total games between their two matches, clinching the quarterfinal win for the Cougars.

RSC Semifinal Match vs Oakland City (4-0 Loss)

After winning their quarterfinal match with the Bears of Shawnee State earlier in the day Thursday, the Cougars advanced to take on Oakland City, a team receiving votes in the final NAIA Coaches' Poll of the season.

The Mighty Oaks of Oakland City won the doubles point by winning #1 and #3 doubles. Both matches finished with a score of 6-2. Heading into singles play, Oakland City needed three wins to advance to Friday's Championship match, while IU Kokomo needed four wins.

Oakland City would earn wins at #2, #5, and #6 singles to seal the victory and put a halt to the remaining singles matches on court.

IU Kokomo's Reiley Hiser was the lone Cougar to win a set in the match with Oakland City, as she won set one 6-4 with set two on serve when play was stopped.

Maria Oliveira was locked in a battle at #1 singles, trailing 6-5 in the first set when play was halted.
