KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo baseball team played their final home games of the regular season on Saturday, as the program's 14 seniors were honored prior to first pitch against Midway University. The Cougars lost game one 13-11 and won game two 7-6. With just one game left in their regular season, the Cougars hold a record of 30-16 this season, along with an 18-6 mark in conference games.
Game One (9 innings): 13-11 Loss
- Midway posted the first runs of the game on a grand slam down the right field line in the top of the third inning.
- The Cougars quickly answered with six runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead. First, Dylan Steele homered with Matt Iacobucci on base, then Riley Garczynski hit an RBI single to send Garrett Lupoi home. To wrap up the inning, Tahj Borom hit a three-run bomb to give the Cougars a 6-4 lead, his first collegiate home run.
- The Eagles scored four more runs in the fifth inning to retake the lead at 8-6.
- IUK enjoyed their own four-run inning in the seventh. Matt Iacobucci doubled to left to lead off the inning before scoring on an RBI single by Dylan Steele, who then scored on Thomas Obergfell's base-hit. Jarod Gillespie and Caden Whitehead scored on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch respectively as the Cougars put themselves back in front 10-8 with two innings to play.
- Midway scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 13-10 lead.
- Jarod Gillespie hit a solo-shot in the bottom of the ninth to cut IUK's deficit to two runs, but the Cougars were unable to come back and ultimately fell by a final score of 13-11.
- Mason Whiteley started on the mound for the Cougars. In five innings of work, Whiteley surrendered eight runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out four batters and walking two.
- Brandon Bultemeier entered the game in the sixth inning for IUK and gave up one hit in an inning and a third of work.
- Connor Hurt followed Bultemeier and struck out one batter in his lone inning on the bump.
- Hurt was relieved by Ben Harris, who gave up four hits and five earned runs while recording one strikeout and two walks in an inning of work.
- Victor Fujiu recorded the final two outs for IU Kokomo, striking out the final two batters in the top of the ninth inning.Â
Game Two (7 innings): 7-6 Win
- The Eagles took another early lead with four runs in the second inning.
- In the bottom of the third inning however, Caden Whitehead scored on Alex Janke's RBI double, before Janke scored on Jacob Medvescek's single. Kasey Ross hit a sacrifice fly to send Medvescek home, and Luke Hanson's RBI single tied the score at four through two complete.
- Matt Iacobucci reached via single and scored on an infield throwing error in the fifth inning to give IU Kokomo a 5-4 lead.
- Midway took the lead back in the sixth inning with a two-RBI double to bring the score to 6-5.
- In the sixth inning, Caden Whitehead singled and crossed the plate on Jacob Medvescek's sacrifice fly to tie the score at six. Soon after, Kasey Ross hit a clutch RBI double, sending Alex Janke home and allowing the Cougs to retake a one-run lead.
- Midway failed to answer in the seventh as IU Kokomo claimed a 7-6 victory.
- JT Holton started game two for IUK in a long-awaited return from injury for the veteran lefthander. Holton spent four innings on the mound and recorded five strikeouts and one walk while giving up eight hits and four earned runs.
- Holton was relieved in the fifth inning by Luke McDonald, who struck out one in a clean fifth inning.
- The sixth inning was handled by Jack Bruington, who gave up three hits and two earned runs. Bruington recorded the win however to improve to 1-0 thanks to two sixth inning runs from the Cougars.
- Nathan Stanley tossed the seventh to earn his first save at IU Kokomo. Stanley gave up one hit, but successfully retired three batters in the top of the seventh inning to close out the win.
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday for a single game at nationally ranked University of the Cumberlands, before looking on to the River States Conference Championship that begins next weekend with a series that is TBD.
