Baseball Takes Two from IUPUC Saturday to Sweep the Crimson Pride

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team won two more games at IUPUC Saturday afternoon, completing the three-game sweep of the Crimson Pride. With the wins, the Cougars are now 24-13 overall and 12-3 in River States Conference play.

Game One (9 Innings) : 8-3 Win
  • Mason Whiteley got the start on the mound for IU Kokomo, tossing a solid five innings to earn the win. Whiteley's final line: 6 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K.
  • Tucker Platt rode a strong cross-wind out to right field for a solo-shot, giving IU Kokomo a 1-0 lead after a half inning.
  • Alex Janke led off the third with a triple, scoring a batter later on a Riley Garczynski RBI groundout. Platt singled and was followed by Kasey Ross, who went deep to right to make it a 4-0 lead on a beautiful inside-out swing.
  • IUPUC scored one run on two hits and an error in the fourth to cut the deficit to three.
  • IUK would get that run right back in the top of the fifth, as Alex Janke singled and then scored on a Ross RBI single. The hit was Janke's third of the game.
  • The Crimson Pride of IUPUC pushed two more across in the fifth to cut the previously four-run deficit in half.
  • Asa Christie entered to pitch the sixth for IUK, posting a zero in his lone full frame of work. Christie's final line: 1.1 IP, H, BB, K.
  • The Cougars eventually got those two runs back in the seventh, as Ross was HBP and scored on a Jarod Gillespie RBI single. Gillespie's aggressive baserunning got him to third before he scored on a balk. The Cougars led 7-3 through six and a half.
  • Jack Bruington relieved Christie with a man on and one out in the seventh. Jack induced a 4-6-3 double play to to the first man he faced, getting the Cougs out of the inning before working a scoreless eighth. Bruington's final line: 1.2 IP, BB, K.
  • Ross led off the top of the ninth with a double, his third hit of the day. His pinch runner, Judah Hennessy, would score on a Tahj Borom RBI double, adding an insurance run that made it 8-3 IU Kokomo. 
  • Blake Kimball worked an efficient ninth to clinch another series win for the Cougars. He sandwiched a groundout between a pair of K's to post a zero in his lone inning of work.

Game Two (7 Innings) : 16-4 Win
  • Alec Murphy got the nod in game two for the Cougs, bouncing back after a tough first inning to earn the win with a strong five innings of work. Murphy's final line: 5 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K.
  • IUPUC struck first with a pair of runs in the first, after the first three batters reached base via walk.
  • After not scoring in each of the first two innings, IU Kokomo would score in each of the final five frames, including crooked numbers in four of five.
  • Caden Whitehead walked to open the inning, before scoring on a Jacob Medvescek RBI double. Tucker Platt singled, and then both he and Medvescek would score on a Jack Leverenz shot to the base of the fence in centerfield that made it 4-2 Cougars.
  • The Cougars would score three more runs in the fourth as Brayden Coffey walked and Caden Whitehead singled, before Coffey scored on an Alex Janke RBI single. Both Whitehead and Janke would then score on a Leverenz RBI double, his third and fourth RBI of the game.
  • Five more runs came across in the top of the fifth, as the onslaught was on. Tahj Borom walked ahead of Coffey, who singled through the 5-6 hole. Both Borom and Coffey would score on balls that got past the catcher. Whitehead and Alex Janke each reached ahead of Medvescek, who sent the deepest home-run of the weekend to right field to make it a 12-2 IUK lead.
  • IUPUC scored a pair of runs on a hit and an error in the fifth to make it 12-4. 
  • Brandon Bultemeier was the first man out of the pen for IU Kokomo in game two of Saturday's DH, tossing the sixth. He induced two groundouts while walking one and striking out a man.
  • Coffey would once again single through the left side in the sixth before scoring on a Derek Seigneur RBI single to left-center that made it 13-4.
  • Platt and Leverenz each reached with two outs in the seventh, and both would score on a triple by freshman infielder Gavin Clayton. Clayton would then score on a Garrett Lupoi RBI single to close the scoring.
  • Luke McDonald closed out the 12-run win for the Cougars with a scoreless seventh. McDonald induced a pair of groundouts while allowing a hit and a walk and striking out one.

The Cougars will play a nine-inning midweek game Tuesday at Georgetown College (Ky.) before a three-game series at Bresica University next weekend.
