Baseball Earns Pair of Walk-Off Victories Friday Against Oakland City

KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo baseball team kicked off a three-game series against Oakland City with a doubleheader on Friday. The Cougars won a pair of extra-inning games to improve to 20-11 this season with a 9-2 mark in River States Conference play.

Game 1: 6-5 win (11 innings)
  • The Cougars scored two runs in the first inning for an early lead. First Riley Garczynski scored on a groundout byTucker Platt, then Alex Janke scored on a sac-fly from Jack Leverenz.
  • Oakland City got on the board with an RBI double in the third inning to cut the deficit to one.
  • The Oaks scored one run in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Kasey Ross hit a two run homer in the sixth inning to retake the lead for IUK.
  • Oakland City scored two runs in the eighth inning to lead 5-4.
  • Down to the final strike of the game, Dylan Janke hit an RBI single off the wall to send Judah Hennessey across the plate and the game into extra innings.
  • After a scoreless tenth inning, Brayden Coffey scored from second on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th to win the game for IU Kokomo, 6-5.
  • Logan Greer started for IUK and shoved for seven innings. Greer recorded eight strikeouts and one walk while giving up five hits and five runs (three earned).
  • Brandon Bultemeier relieved Greer in the eighth inning. Bultemeier gave up two hits in 1 2/3 innings.
  • Blake Kimball was dominant in his work for IUK in extras, earning the win. Kimball walked one batter and struck out two.
Game 2: 5-4 win (8 innings)
  • Oakland City scored two runs in the first inning and another in the second to take an early 3-0 lead. 
  • Tucker Platt put the Cougars on the board with a solo home run in the third inning.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jack Leverenz hit a two-RBI single to tie the score and send the game into extra innings for the second time of the day.
  • An RBI double in the top of the eighth inning put the Oaks back in front 4-3.
  • Brayden Coffey scored on an infield error to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Janke utilized his wheels to wreak havoc on the defense on that same play, advancing to third. This was quickly followed by an RBI single by Tucker Platt to send Alex Janke home and win the game 5-4.
  • Mason Whiteley started for the Cougars, pitching a solid six innings after a tough start to his outing. Whiteley gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) and struck out nine batters. 
  • Asa Christie pitched the seventh inning for IU Kokomo. Christie struck out one batter and gave up two hits and one earned run.
  • Victor Fujiu entered in the eighth and earned the win. Fujiu gave up one hit and recorded two strikeouts.

The Cougars will close their three game series with Oakland City tomorrow afternoon, before a non-conference matchup at Indiana Tech on Tuesday.
