Baseball Splits DH with #20 Point Park to Open RSC Play; Rubber Match Set for Noon Sunday

KOKOMO, Ind. – The IU Kokomo baseball team split a doubleheader against #20 Point Park University on Saturday, the start of a three game series against the Pioneers to open River States Conference play.

The Cougars head into Sunday's rubber match with a 9-10 overall record and a 1-1 conference mark. 
 

Game 1 (9 innings): 10-8 win 

  • Point Park scored three runs in the second inning on a two-RBI triple and a sacrifice fly, taking a 3-0 lead.

  • IUK answered immediately with three runs in the bottom of the inning; Kasey Ross scored on an RBI single by Jack Leverenz, and Caden Whitehead singled to drive in Leverenz and Garrett Lupoi

  • An RBI double and an RBI single gave Point Park two runs in the third inning, as they regained a 5-3 advantage. 

  • Alex Janke scored on a groundout from Kasey Ross in the third inning, cutting the deficit to one at 5-4. 

  • Riley Garczynski went big-fly with a three-run home run in the fourth inning, driving in Caden Whitehead and Jack Leverenz, to take IUK's first lead of the game at 7-5. 

  • In the fifth inning, Jacob Medvescek hit another three-run homer, sending Kasey Ross and Tucker Platt across the plate in front of him to make it a 10-5 IUK lead. 

  • Point Park hit two solo home runs in the seventh inning, and an RBI double in the eighth, but failed to complete the come back as IUK sealed a 10-8 win. 

  • Justin Bultemeier got the start and the win for IU Kokomo, pitching six innings. Bultemeier posted four zero's while giving up six earned runs on 11 hits and a walk, striking out five.

  • Jack Bruington relieved Bultemeier in the seventh inning, allowing one hit and one run. Blake Kimball came in after Bruington and allowed two hits with one strikeout. Alec Murphy followed Kimball, allowing two hits and one earned run. 

  • Victor Fujiu entered the game in the eighth inning, pitching the final two innings and earning the save. Fujiu recorded three strikeouts without allowing a hit. 

Game 2 (7 innings): 6-3 loss 

  • The Pioneers hit a solo home run in the first inning for an early lead.

  • Point Park added another on an RBI single in the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead

  • In the second inning, Kasey Ross scored on an RBI triple from Jacob Medvescek, who then scored on a single by Jack Leverenz. The Cougs and Pioneers were tied 2-2 through two.

  • Point Park retook a one-run lead on an RBI single in the third inning. 

  • A two run homer in the fifth inning put the Pioneers up 5-2. 

  • Tucker Platt came through with an RBI single in the sixth inning, driving in Alex Janke to make it 5-3 Point Park.

  • Point Park added an insurance run on an RBI double in the seventh, and IUK failed to answer in the bottom of the inning, falling 6-3 to the Pioneers. 

  • Ben Harris started on the mound for IUK, pitching two innings with two strikeouts and one walk while allowing five hits and three earned runs. 

  • Mason Whiteley relieved Harris and took the loss, allowing one hit, two runs, and four walks.

  • AJ Burkhalter followed Whiteley and allowed three hits and one run with two walks. 

  • Luke McDonald closed the game for IUK, retiring Point Park's final batter. 

The Cougars will finish their three game series against the Pioneers tomorrow with a noon first-pitch, before another home doubleheader on Monday against Lourdes University.
