COLUMBUS, Ind. - The IU Kokomo volleyball team took their winning ways on the road for a mid-week battle with the Crimson Pride of IU Columbus. The Cougars were forced to play from behind in set one, taking care of business in three to win their 21st-straight match.
Nearing the midway point of set one it was IU Kokomo in front 11-6, but a 7-0 Crimson Pride run while trailing by three gave them a 20-16 lead late in the set.Â
Trailing IU Columbus by four, an IUC service error ended their scoring run and sparked one from the Cougars, as
Heather Hayes's squad closed out the frame on a 9-0 run to win it 25-20.
Tied 4-4 early in the second, the Crimson Pride won five-straight to force a Cougar timeout. IU Kokomo seemed to respond once again, battling back to lead 13-12 halfway through the set. The Cougars slowly put distance between themselves and IUC, going on to win set two 25-18.
Set three proved to be all IU Kokomo, as the Cougars jumped out to a 10-3 lead before extending it to 11 at 18-7. Consecutive kills from
Alexis Baney with the Cougars leading 23-9 closed out yet another sweep for 11th ranked IU Kokomo.
Mya Grigsby led the Cougars in kills once again Tuesday, flooring a match-high 11.
Lexi Broyles added eight kills and a strong six blocks, while
Cali Cummings had seven.
Lea Mummert chipped in five kills and a match-high four aces,Â
Kaley Lyons led the IUK setters with 17 assists to go along with eight digs.
Allison Richman followed with 15 assists and four total blocks.
Ellie Garland led the IUK back row with 14 digs and four assists, with Grigsby adding eight digs.Â
The Cougars will close out the regular season Friday with a match at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. First-serve is set for 7:00 PM.
