OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team took care of business Saturday in Oakland City, sweeping the Mighty Oaks to improve to 18-4 overall and 6-0 in River States Conference action.
Oakland City started the match strong, jumping out to an 8-4 lead to force an early IUK timeout. The Cougars were trailing 19-14 late in the set before erasing the deficit with a 5-0 run, evening the score at 19-19.
After the Mighty Oaks won the ensuing point to re-gain a one point lead, IU Kokomo closed out the set on a 6-0 run, highlighted by three
Cali Cummings kills.Â
Fresh off of a come-from-behind first set victory, the Cougars found themselves playing from behind once again in the second. Oakland City led 13-10 midway thru the set, but IUK won the ensuing nine points to take a six-point lead of their own at 19-13. IU Kokomo closed out a 25-16 second-set win for a 2-0 lead.
Unlike the first two sets, it was the Cougars playing with an early lead. The visitors led by just three at 16-13 before winning nine of the final 11 points for a commanding 25-15 third set victory, closing out a sixth-straight sweep.
Three Cougars recorded double-digit kills Saturday, led by
Mya Grigsby with 14.
Lexi Broyles and
Maggie Connell each recorded 10 kills while
Cali Cummings floored eight. Cummings also totaled a career-high eight total blocks.
Allison Richman led the setters with 19 assists as
Kaley Lyons followed with 15. Grigsby also had a team-high 14 digs, while
Ellie Garland had nine digs and four assists.Â
The Cougars will now return home for a three-match home-stand, beginning Tuesday at 7:00 PM against the Red Wolves of IU East.
