NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team completed the River States Conference portion of their schedule with an unbeaten record of 19-0, clinching the #1 seed in the RSC Championship and the program's ninth-consecutive NAIA Tournament appearance.
After a tight-match Friday night at Midway, the Cougars had their hands full Saturday afternoon in New Albany against a solid IU Southeast squad.
While IU Kokomo held a minimal lead early on in set one, IU Southeast won four-straight points to take their first lead of the match at 10-9. With the Grenadiers in front 13-12, the Cougars utilized a 5-0 run to take a four-point lead. IU Kokomo held on to win set one 25-20.
The start to set two was neck and neck, but it was the Cougars once again who reeled off six-straight points to lead 14-8. The set proved to be far from over, as IU Southeast would battle back to tie the match at 17 apiece.
IU Kokomo erased three Grenadier set-points late in the set, eventually using a 3-0 mini-run to take a dramatic set two 30-28.
The Cougs found themselves leading 13-9 midway through set three, but four-consecutive Grenadier points tied it at 13. IUK led by just one later in the set at 18-17 before a 6-0 run gave them seven match points. IU Kokomo won the set 25-20 and the match 3-0 for a 12th-consecutive straight-set victory.
Lexi Broyles led the Cougars with 11 kills, while
Audrey Strawsma contributed 10 kills and nine digs.
Kaley Lyons recorded 24 assists to lead IUK while
Allison Richman tallied 13.
Alvyia Smith led IU Kokomo in digs with 18, as
Ellie Garland recorded 12 and
Mya Shively added nine.
The Cougars will begin postseason play Tuesday evening against a TBD opponent in the Quarterfinals of the River States Conference Championship.
