KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's soccer team defeated Rio Grande at home by a score of 2-0 on Saturday. With the win, the Cougars clinch the River States Conference regular season title, and finish their season with a record of 10-3-5 with a 8-0-2 mark in conference play.
Not only did head coach
Sohaila Akhavein's squad earn the programs first ever RSC regular season title, but the Cougars also locked up the #1 seed and home-field advantage in the upcoming RSC tournament.
The game started off fairly uneventful, with just two shots on goal in the first half, one from each team. Cougar goalkeeper
Sydney Miller recorded a save on Rio Grande's lone shot, before
Kaiya Bogers found the back of the net for IUK in the 37th minute on a play assisted by
Kelsi Hoot. The Cougars took this 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half of the game was more action-packed, with IUK recording eight shots and Rio Grande taking two.
Mackenzie Gibbons gave the Cougars insurance with a goal in the 72nd minute on a second IUK assist of the night from
Keely Hoopingarner. Rio Grande failed to answer as the Cougars held on for a 2-0 victory.
Starting goalie
Sydney Miller finished with one save on one shot on goal for a perfect save percentage at 100%. The shutout is her fourth of the season.
As RSC regular season champions, the Cougars hold the #1 seed and will host WVU Tech next Saturday, November 4th in Kokomo. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
