KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's tennis team opened the fall portion of their 2022 season Friday afternoon with a home match against Spring Arbor University. The Cougars won matches at one and five singles, but ultimately fell 5-2.

No. 5 - Maria Oliveira (IUK) def. SAU 6-7, 6-3, 10-7
No. 6 - SAU def. Chloe Schmidt (IUK) 6-2, 6-2

Doubles
No. 1 - Orlando/Johnson (IUK) def. SAU 6-2
No. 2 - SAU def. Saylor/Hiser (IUK) 6-2
No. 3 - SAU def. Oliveira O'Rourke 6-3

The Cougars of IU Kokomo started off on the right foot, as the number one doubles duo of Gabbie Orlando and Reese Johnson won their match 6-2. However,  Spring Arbor won at #2 doubles and #3 doubles to take the doubles point.

Trailing 1-0, Spring Arbor would win matches at #3 and #4 singles to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Gabbie Orlando won her match for IUK at #1 singles by default, as her opponent retired while Orlando led 6-4, 3-2.

With the score now 3-1 in Spring Arbor's favor, they would clinch the match by winning both the #2 and #6 singles matches. 

Freshman Maria Oliveira impressed in her singles debut for IU Kokomo, as she gutted out the longest match of the day to win in three sets. Oliveira gave the Cougars their second point of the match, as IUK fell to Spring Arbor 5-2.

IU Kokomo will return to the courts next Friday, September 9, as they welcome Bethel University (Ind.) for a match at 11:00 A.M. before hosting Grace College (Ind.) at 5:00 P.M.
