GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team closed out play at the Aquinas/Cornerstone Invite with a pair of wins. The Cougars swept Judson University 3-0 before taking down Aquinas College in four sets. IUK is now 9-3 through three weekends of action.
Match One Recap
The Cougars came out of the gates strong, winning the first six points of the match to force a Judson timeout. Trailing 16-10, Judson managed to go on a 5-0 run to get within one and force an IUK timeout. The Cougars extended their lead back to five at 23-18, but Judson once again trimmed the lead to one at 24-23. After another
Heather Hayes timeout, IU Kokomo closed out the opening set 25-23.
IU Kokomo led 15-9 before utilizing a 6-0 run to take a commanding 21-9 second-set lead. IUK cruised to a 25-11 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
IUK carried momentum over to the third set as they took an early 7-0 lead to force a Judson timeout. Leading 16-10, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to take a 22-10 lead. IU Kokomo won the third set 25-14 and the match 3-0 over Judson University.
Sidney Gerig led IUK with 12 kills while freshman
Allison Richman had a match-high 35 assists.
Alyvia Smith also had a match-high in digs with 18.
Match Two Recap
IU Kokomo led early on in the opening set, but a 5-0 run gave Aquinas a 15-13 lead. The two sides traded points for much of the opening set, but Aquinas got the better of IUK for a 25-23 first set win.
The Cougars won the first four points of the second set to set the tone. IUK extended their lead to seven at 12-5 to force an Aquinas College timeout. The Cougs led by as many as eight in the set on their way to a 25-19 set win to tie the match at one set apiece.
IUK built an early 8-3 lead to force a Saints timeout. Trailing 10-5, the Saints went on a 5-0 run to tie the set and force a timeout. Aquinas led 24-22 late in the set, but IUK saved two match points on the way to a 26-24 third set win.
With the fourth set tied at seven, the Cougs utilized a 6-0 spurt to take a 13-7 lead. The Cougars controlled play for the remainder of the set to win it 25-14 and the match 3-1 over Aquinas College.
Lexi Broyles led IUK with 12 kills while
Audrey Strawsma impressed at the net with ten blocks.
Allison Richman had a match-high 39 assists and
Alyvia Smith had a match-high 23 digs.
The Cougars will be back-in-action next Saturday, September 17, as they welcome RSC foe IU East and Trinity International to the Student Activities and Events Center for a pair of matches.
