Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Point Park

KOKOMO, Ind. – In their final home doubleheader of the season, the Indiana University Kokomo baseball team split a pair of games with Point Park University. The Cougars led from wire-to-wire in the opener before the Pioneers came from behind to take game two of the series. 
 
Game One Key Moments
  • In the top of the first, IU Kokomo starter Owen Callaghan pitched around a leadoff walk and a single, inducing a double play to get out of the inning. 
  • Pat Mills ripped a one-out double and Noah Hurlock drew a walk to put two runners on for the Cougars in the bottom of the first. Jared Heard doubles down the left field line to score both Mills and Hurlock. Jack Leverenz plated Heard with a double of his own and later came around to score on a Point Park error to give IUK a 4-0 lead after one. 
  • The Pioneers scored their first run of the game in the fifth to make it a 4-1 game. 
  • IU Kokomo took advantage of a Point Park error to get the run back in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead, 5-1. 
  • Thomas Oberhfell singles and stole second to lead off the sixth for the Cougars. After advancing to third on a fly ball to the outfield, Obergfell scored on a safety squeeze by Hurlock. 
  • Bryce Lenz singled through the left side to start the IU Kokomo half of the seventh and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Cody Bible to make it 7-1. 
  • Point Park plated four runs in the eighth to get within two runs of the IU Kokomo lead. 
  • The Pioneers fifth error of the game allowed the Cougars to add an insurance run in the eight. 
Game One Pitching
  • Callaghan earned his seventh win of the season as he tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one run on eight hits. 
  • Ryan Beck earned his fifth save of the year, tossing 1.1 innings allowing no runs on no hits. 
Game Two Key Moments
  • Riley Garcznyski singled to start the third for the Cougars and moved up 90 feet after a Dylan Janke single. A sacrifice bunt by Cody Bible moved Garczynski and pinch runner Tahj Borom to second and third. A sacrifice fly from Obergfell, scored Garczynski to give IUK the 1-0 advantage. 
  • A two-out rally by Point Park evened the game at one a piece.
  • Heard singled in the fourth and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Garczynski laced a double into the left centerfield gap to score Heard, putting the Cougars back in front. 
  • Two walks for the Pioneers in the fifth resulted in a run, tying the game at two. 
  • Bible drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a passed ball. Bible moved up to third after a sacrifice bunt from Obergfell. After Mills was intentionally walked, Heard scored Bible on a sacrifice fly to break the tie. Dylan Steele delivered a base hit to score Mills to put IUK up 4-2. 
  • Two IUK errors allowed Point Park to plate three runs in the sixth and take the 5-4 advantage. 
  • Garczynski and Tucker Platt were aboard in the bottom of the sixth, but they were left stranded. 
  • In their final at-bat the Cougars went down in order. 
Game Two Pitching
  • Lucas Letsinger struck out eight batters in 5.2 innings but ultimately ended up earning a no decision. 
  • Beck made his second appearance of the day and allowed one run on a third of an inning, taking the loss.

  • The Pioneers and Cougars will close out the series and regular season tomorrow as Kokomo Municipal Stadium. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
