Baseball Drops a Pair of Non-Conference Games to Lawrence Tech

UTICA, Mich. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team dropped a pair of games on Wednesday night as the Cougars traveled north to take on Lawrence Tech University at Jimmy John's Field. 
 
A late comeback effort from IU Kokomo fell short in the first game, losing 5-4 before a six-run inning by the Blue Devils used a six-run inning in the second game to win 10-4. The Cougars record falls to 18-10 on the season. 
 
Game One Key Moments
  • Lawrence Tech took advantage of two IU Kokomo errors in the bottom of the first to plate three runs, taking the 3-0 advantage. 
  • The Blue Devils added a run in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead over the Cougars. 
  • Riley Garczynski drew a one-out walk in the Cougars half of the third. Pat Mills blasted his eighth home run of the season to make it a 4-2 game. 
  • Lawrence Tech got a run back in their half of the third to extend their lead to 5-2. 
  • After back-to-back strikeouts for the Cougars to lead off the fifth frame, Dylan Steele doubled and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. A Jack Leverenz single plated Steele to bring IU within two runs of the Blue Devils lead. 
  • With three outs to go, Mills led off the seventh with his second home run of the game and ninth of the season to make it a one-run contest. 
  • Noah Hurlock followed up Mills' bomb with a double, putting the tying run at second with nobody out. Bryce Lenz came on to pinch run for Hurlock and stole third. With the tying run 90 feet away.
  • After a groundout and strikeout, Jared Heard drew a walk and stole second. With runners at second and third with two away, a strikeout ended the Cougars comeback effort. 
Game One Pitching
  • JT Holton took his first loss of the season (4-1) as the freshman tossed just one inning, allowing three runs, striking out two batters. 
  • Connor Hurt provided good innings out of the bullpen, throwing three innings, allowing no runs on two hits, and striking out six Blue Devil batters. 
Game Two Key Moments
  • The Cougars offense got going early in the second game as Lenz singled with one out in the first and later stole second. After a walk by Mills to put two runners aboard, a double from Steele plated Lenz and Mills to make it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars. 
  • Lawrence Tech jumped in front, scoring three runs in the home half of the first. 
  • Jared Heard drew a leadoff walk in the third and advanced to second on a LTU wild pitch. Mills picked up his fourth RBI of the day with a double down the left field line to score Heard. Steele singled through left side, but Mills was held up at third. The Cougars stranded runners on the corners to end the inning with the score even at three. 
  • A run from the Blue Devils in the bottom half would give LTU the lead back at 4-3. 
  • Seth Denoyer and Tahj Borom both singled in the fourth frame but the Cougars would be doubled up to end the inning. 
  • LTU blew the game open in the fifth, plating six runs to take a commanding 10-3 advantage. 
  • Masen Melton came on to pinch hit in the seventh and singled through the left side. Melton moved into scoring position on a balk by the LTU pitcher. Mills drove in another run, his fifth of the day with a single to centerfield, scoring Melton to make it 10-4. 
  • A Leverenz single would be the last hit of the day for the Cougars as IUK left two runners stranded to end the game. 
Game Two Pitching  
  • Lucas Letsinger started for the Cougars and took the loss, throwing three innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. 
  • Sam Hinshaw threw an inning in relief, giving up just two hits. 
  • Ryan Beck tossed a shutout inning, allowing no hits.

  • The Cougars will resume River States Conference action this weekend as they host Midway University at Kokomo Municipal Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
