Chambers Scores Game-High 18 in Women's Basketball Loss at Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team dropped a River States Conference contest on Tuesday night as they fell to the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University, 64-51. The Cougars drop to 9-13 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Tia Chambers led all scorers with 18 points to go along with four rebounds. Anya Friend knocked down three triples for nine points while Sierra Peete chipped in with eight.

The Cougars opened the first quarter on a 5-0 run and would later build a 14-5 lead after Gabby Joyner knocked down a three, forcing the Mighty Oaks to call a timeout with 3:11 to go in the quarter. Oakland City outscored the Cougars 5-1 to close out the quarter, making it a 15-10 game in favor of IU Kokomo after 10 minutes of action.

On the Cougars' first possession of the second quarter, Joyner drained a jumper to give IUK a 17-10 lead. A three-minute scoring drought by the Cougars allowed Oakland City to take the lead as the Mighty Oaks scored 11 unanswered points. Chambers ended the IUK drought with a basket off a pass from Anna Kiser. Another bucket from Chambers followed by a layup from Mullins gave IUK the lead back with 4:15 to play in the second.

Trailing 26-23 with 2:39 on the clock, Anya Friend knotted the game at 26 with one of her three buckets from beyond the arc. A 4-0 spurt by the Mighty Oaks send the Cougars into the break trailing by four.

Oakland City opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run that lasted nearly half of the quarter. Chambers broke the Mighty Oaks run with a layup with half the quarter still to play. Oakland City remained in control, taking a 48-36 lead into the final quarter.

The deficit would be too much for the Cougars to overcome as they eventually fell 64-51 to the Mighty Oaks.

Oakland City got 19 of its 64 points from the free throw line as the Cougars committed 20 fouls compared to just nine from the Mighty Oaks. IU Kokomo got to the free throw ling just eight times, converting just four of them.

The Cougars will hit the road again this weekend as they travel to Midway University on Saturday. The Cougars and Eagles will take the court at 3:00 p.m.
