CLEVELAND, Ga. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team took game one of their series against Truett McConnell, defeating the Bears 8-1. The Cougars improve to 2-3 on the season with the victory.
Owen Callaghan threw a gem to earn his first win of the season on the mound for the Cougars. The left-hander tossed seven innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three batters.
Truett McConnell struck first scoring a run in the bottom half of the first inning. With two outs in the third,
Bryce Lenz started a rally, singling to and later stealing second to move into scoring position.
Riley Garczynski plated Lenz with a single up the middle to even the game at one.
Callaghan got into a jam in the fourth allowing two singles and issuing a walk to load the bases with one out. The veteran induced a flyout and a groundout to strand three runners on base.
Noah Hurlock busted things open in the fifth frame as he blasted the teams' first home run of the season, a grand slam to put IU Kokomo ahead, 5-1.
Callaghan retired the next six Truett McConnell hitters to close out the night for him.
In the Cougars' half of the eighth they would tack on three insurance runs to make it 8-1.
Luke Hanson started the two-out rally, drawing a walk and would move up 90 feet after
Tahj Borom was hit by a pitch. Lenz singled to right field, scoring Hanson and Garczynski would pick up two RBI with a single to centerfield.
Mason Whiteley would come out of the bullpen for the final two innings for the Cougars. Whiteley retired the side in the eighth before striking out the side in the ninth to close out the game.
Garczynski finished the game with three RBI while Hurlock drove in four. Lenz finished with an RBI and two stolen bases.
The Cougar offense drew a season-high seven walks in the win.
The series will conclude tomorrow with a double-header starting at 11 a.m.
