Women's Basketball Beats Brescia 72-61 On the Road for First Win

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team took down Brescia University 72-61 Saturday afternoon for their first win of the season. The Cougars are now 1-10 overall and 1-4 in River States Conference play.

Alaya Chapman had an impressive outing Saturday, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Olivia Dowden contributed ten points and four rebounds, while Mia Catey had seven points and a game-high 11 boards. Anna Kiser and Anya Friend each added seven points.

Chapman and IU Kokomo made it a point early to feed the ball inside, and Chapman scored on the Cougars first two possessions of the game for an early 4-0 lead. A Mia Catey layup extended the IUK lead to seven at 12-5, but the Bearcats managed to trim the lead. Karly Kirkpatrick hit a runner late in the quarter to give the Cougars a 15-12 lead after one.

The Cougars maintained a lead for the entirety of the second quarter, but late in the quarter Brescia got within a point. The Bearcats trimmed the lead to one with 1:32 remaining in the half, but Anya Friend drilled a three for IUK and Chapman scored at the rim to give the Cougars a 40-34 halftime lead.

IU Kokomo came out of halftime strong, scoring the first four points to take a double-digit lead. Brescia cut their deficit to four, but that was as close as they got for the remainder of the period. The Cougars built their lead back up to nine and led 56-47 after three quarters.

IUK quickly pushed their lead back to double-digits early in the fourth, and completely controlled fourth quarter action. Leading 62-55, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 71-55. IUK closed out a 72-61 win over Brescia for their first win of the year.

The Cougars will return to play next Friday, December 16th, as they travel to Illinois to take on Olivet Nazarene.
