Women's Soccer Thrashes Rio Grande 7-1 to Win Program's First RSC Championship and Earn First Ever NAIA Tournament Bid

KOKOMO, Ind. – The IU Kokomo women's soccer team took down Rio Grande (Ohio) 7-1 in Saturday evening's RSC Championship match, in what was a thrashing from start to finish. With the win, the Cougars advance to the NAIA National Championship as the River States Conference's automatic qualifier.

IU Kokomo scored early and often Saturday, as Keely Hoopingarner picked up where she left off Wednesday, scoring 42 seconds into the match. Hoopingarner got past the defense and beat the goalkeeper to give IUK a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the match.

Less than ten minutes later, Morgan Scruggs found the back of the net after a beautiful touch pass from Skylar Mannon. Scruggs ninth goal of the season gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute.

Rio Grande would get within a goal in the 15th minute, after an own goal from the IU Kokomo defense.

The Cougars would add on to their lead twice more in the opening half. Kaiya Bogers scored in the 33rd minute to give the Cougs a two-goal lead, and Hoopingarner would score her second of the match in the final minute of the half to give IUK a commanding 4-1 halftime lead.

Just as they did in the first half, IU Kokomo scored in the opening minute of the second half to extend their lead to 5-1. Ashlyn Morefield found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season, off of a Kelsi Hoot assist.

Morgan Scruggs notched her second goal of the game in the 58th minute. Scruggs tenth of the year was assisted by Hoopingarner, and gave IU Kokomo a five-goal lead with 30 minutes remaining.

RSC goalscoring leader Keely Hoopingarner scored her third goal of the match in the 80th minute for her second consecutive game with a hat-trick. Hoopingarner's 25th of the season gave IUK a 7-1 lead with ten minutes to play.

IU Kokomo closed out the 7-1 win over the University of Rio Grande to win the RSC Championship and qualify for the NAIA National Championship.

The Cougars will find out where they are headed for the opening rounds of the NAIA National Championship Monday, as the women's soccer selection show is set for 12:00 PM EST.
