PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The IU Kokomo volleyball team dropped a tightly-contested five-set match at Point Park Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Cougars are now 17-5 overall and 6-1 in River States Conference play.
IU Kokomo started the match strong, winning the first three points of the match. By the midway point of the opening set, the Cougars led 13-7. Leading 14-9, IUK went on a 5-0 run to take a ten-point lead. The Cougars would win the opening set 25-15.
The second set featured multiple momentum swings, including a 3-0 run by the Pioneers to take a 15-12 lead force an IUK timeout. The Cougs battled back to tie the match at 21 and force a Point Park timeout. The Pioneers won four of the five points after the timeout to win the set 25-22.
The third set was tied six all until the Cougars utilized a 5-0 run to take an 11-6 lead. IU Kokomo led by as many as eight at 16-8, and would win go on to win the set 25-20 for a 2-1 lead.
IU Kokomo won the first four points of the set and led 9-4 in the fourth set, but Point Park reeled off four straight points to trim the lead to one. The Cougs took a 21-16 lead to force a Point Park timeout, but the Pioneers responded.
Point Park eventually tied the set at 24 and would win the set 27-25 to force a deciding fifth-set.
IUK took a 6-3 lead in the final set, but Point Park answered and took their first lead of the set at 8-7, forcing a Cougar timeout. Point Park led by three at 11-8, but IUK trimmed the lead to one at 11-10. The Pioneers won four of the next five points to win the fifth set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
The Cougars will return to action this Tuesday, October 11th, as they will welcome St. Mary-of-the-Woods College to the Student Activities and Events Center. First-serve is set for 7:00 P.M.
