Chambers Records Double-Double in Cougars Win over Ohio Christian

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team defeated Ohio Christian 69-58 Wednesday evening for their first win of the new year. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in River States Conference play.

Senior guard Sierra Peete got the scoring started for IU Kokomo, giving the Cougars an early 2-0 advantage. The Cougars led Ohio Christian 10-5 more than halfway through the first quarter before closing the period on a 13-6 run. Peete contributed nine first quarter points and IU Kokomo led 23-11 after one quarter.

The second quarter proved to be very low scoring, with both sides combining for just 14 points. The Trailblazers cut the Cougar lead to 11 on multiple occasions, however the Cougars were able to build the lead to 16 at 32-16 heading into the half.

Ohio Christian came out of halftime with intensity and a balanced scoring attack, outscoring IU Kokomo 23-12 in the third period. The Cougars were clinging to a five-point lead at 44-39 going into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars responded well to the dominant third quarter performance from Ohio Christian with their highest scoring quarter of the night in the fourth. IU Kokomo had their lead cut to as little as four at 51-47, but that was as close as Ohio Christian got. IUK put up 25 fourth quarter points to hang on to beat Ohio Christian 69-58.

Sierra Peete led all scorers with 22 points. Tia Chambers had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Anya Friend added ten points and a team-high five assists.

IU Kokomo was scheduled to host Ohio Valley University this Saturday, but due to OVU officials closing operations, the contest has been ruled a forfeit win for IUK.

The Cougars will return to action next Tuesday evening as they travel to take on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
