OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team returned to River States Conference action on Tuesday as they traveled to Oakland City to take on the Mighty Oaks. The Cougars cruised to their second 3-0 victory in as many matches. IU Kokomo has now won all three matches with Oakland City dating back to last season.
Erinn Adam hit .846 on the night with 12 kills and just one error in 13 total attacks.
Morgan Weir had 10 kills in the victory.
Jocelyn Hack hit .600 in the win with seven kills and one error in 10 attempts.
In the opening set, the Cougars and Mighty Oaks traded points in the early going. With the match tied at eight, Oakland City scored three straight to take their largest lead of the set. The Mighty Oaks would hang onto the lead until an attack error gave the Cougars a 20-19 advantage, their first lead since it was 8-7. With the set even at 22,
Audrey Strawsma started a 3-0 run for IUK that include two kills from Strawsma and one from
Maggie Connell to close out the set, giving IU Kokomo a 1-0 match lead.
The Cougars got off to a better start in the second set as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Cougars would extend their lead to 9-3, forcing Oakland City to call its first timeout of the set. Back-to-back kills by Weir gave the Cougars an 18-7 lead, their largest of the match, forcing the Mighty Oaks to take their second and final timeout of the set. Strawsma and Adam delivered consecutive kills to lift the Cougars to a 25-11 set win, giving IUK a 2-0 lead in the match. The IU Kokomo offense was efficient in the second set, hitting .448 with 15 kills and two errors in 29 total attempts.
In the third set, the Mighty Oaks were the first to push to five as a kill from Chloee Thomas gave them a 5-3 lead over the Cougars. A pair of kills from Hack with one from Weir sandwiched in between gave the Cougars their first lead of the set at 8-7. Weir followed a Mighty Oak attack error up with a kill to extend the IUK lead to 10-7. Leading 14-12, the Cougars scored three straight points to open a 17-12 lead, their largest of the set. A 7-0 run to take a 23-13 lead took the wind out of the Mighty Oaks' sails as the Cougars cruised to a 25- 17 victory, securing the 3-0 conference victory.
The Cougars will have a break from conference action the rest of this week. IUK will welcome Saint Xavier University to the Student Activities and Events Center on Friday night. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
