NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's tennis program took to the court this weekend, competing in the River States Conference Fall Preview, hosted by Indiana University Southeast.
The Cougars had a good showing at the stacked invite that served as a preview for conference action in the spring season.
In No. 1 singles action,
Gabbie Orlando earned a third-place finish, going 2-1 at the invite. Orlando took down Kiley Staley of Ohio Christian in her opening match and would later fall to Audrey De Witt of IU Southeast. In her final singles match, Orlando earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Larissa O'Rourke played No. 2 singles at the invite and advanced to the winner's bracket with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory over Kyla Dilger of Bresica on Friday. O'Rourke dropped her second-round match and her third-place match was retired.
Reese Johnson earned a first round victory over Daniell Mattis of Brescia University by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Johnson fell to IU East's Eva Caballero but would bounce back to win the third-place match.
Reiley Hiser drew a first round bye and would play Regan Mellinger of IU East in the second round. After falling 6-0, 6-0, Hiser defeated her Brescia opponent, 6-2, 6-3 to earn a third-place finish.
Andrea Saylor picked up a 6-0, 6-0 first round win over Breille Gaddis of Brescia before falling 6-1, 6-3 to Amonette Theron in the second-round match. Saylor defeated IU East's Skylar Cochran to earn a third-place finish in the No. 5 singles draw.
Kelsey Rhoades earned a first round win over Laura Billing of IU East, winning 2-6, 6-0, 10-8. In her second-round match with Oakland City's Marta Fernandez, Rhoades battled tough but fell in a tiebreak, 10-6. Rhoades finished in fourth place after falling to Emma Ellis, 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. All of Rhoades' matches went three sets and ended in a tiebreak situation.
In doubles action, Orlando and Johnson won two straight matches to earn a fifth-place finish. The duo defeated IU Southeast's No. 1 doubles duo, 6-2 in their final match of the invite.
The doubles tandem of HIser/Saylor earned a 6-4 win over the Wilson duo from Oakland City to finish in third place. O'Rourke and Rhoades finished sixth in doubles play.
The Cougars will head to Huntington on Friday, Setember 24th for their second to last match of the fall.
