KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team scored a season-high 98 points in their final non-conference game of the season, defeating Goshen College, 98-60. IU Kokomo was efficient on the offensive end, shooting 58 percent from the floor, 52 percent from long distance both season-high marks for the Cougars.
The Cougars were led by a career-high 22 points from sophomore
Chris Chin. Three other players joined Chin in double figures including
Trequan Spivey who finished with 22,
Julien Hunter with 14 and
Hunter Jackson with 13.
IU Kokomo trailed in the opening minutes of the game, 4-1. The Cougars answered with a 13-2 run that spanned 4:20. Jackson got the run started with his first three of the game to even the game at four. Spivey and
Zach Rinehart each scored four points during the run.
The home team's lead grew to 30-12 with 8:05 left in the first half as a 14-3 run that included buckets by four players extended the IUK lead to 18 points. The Cougars were 6-of-7 from the field during the run and held the Maple Leafs to one bucket over the 4:32 stretch.
The final eight minutes of the half were played a little tighter as the Cougars outscored Goshen by just three points, 21-18. Hunter closed out the half scoring six points including a layup with 42 second left, giving IU Kokomo a 48-33 advantage heading into halftime. Hunter scored 12 points in the first 20 minutes.
Goshen did not go away easy as they cut the IU Kokomo lead to 12 points at 65-53 with 11:31 to go in the game. The Cougars put the game out of reach with a 23-7 run that lasted 7:04, extending their lead to 30 points with 4:48 to play. A 12-2 run to close out the game sealed the Cougars' 15th victory of the season.
Xavier Hines, who saw his first action of the season, played 15 minutes, and connected on 3-of-4 attempts from long distance for nine points. Rinehart chipped in with eight points while pulling in seven rebounds.
IU Kokomo finished with a season-high 22 assists on 37 field goals. Spivey dished out a season-high seven.
Next up for the Cougars will be Ohio Christian on January 5. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Student Activities & Events Center.
