With more than two decades of experience in collegiate athletics spanning coaching, mentorship, and program leadership, Heather Hayes serves as Director of Athletics at Indiana University Kokomo and head coach of the IU Kokomo volleyball program, where she oversees the strategic direction, daily operations, and continued growth of the Cougars’ athletic department while continuing to lead the volleyball program on the court.
Hayes was named Director of Athletics in the spring of 2024 after serving as Interim AD beginning in the fall of 2023, quickly establishing a leadership approach centered on student-athlete success, academic excellence, and competitive achievement across all IU Kokomo athletic programs.
In her role as athletic director, Hayes provides oversight for all aspects of the department, working closely with coaches, staff, and university leadership to enhance the overall student-athlete experience and strengthen the role of athletics within the campus community. Her leadership continues to focus on building programs that compete at a high level while maintaining a strong commitment to academic performance and personal development.
Prior to her transition into athletic administration, Hayes built an extensive background in collegiate athletics through roles in coaching, recruiting, and student-athlete development. Her career has been defined by a collaborative leadership style and a consistent emphasis on building programs that succeed both on the field and in the classroom, earning her respect across the IU Kokomo community and the River States Conference.
Hayes holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Indianapolis and a master’s degree from Ball State University. She resides in Frankfort, Indiana, with her husband, Allen.
