KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The IU Kokomo women's cross country team turned in a strong showing Friday at the NAIA Appalachian Challenge, finishing 12th among 20 teams as freshman Haley Blackburn broke an eight-year-old program record and seven Cougars recorded personal bests.
Blackburn led the way with a 22nd-place finish in 19:06.07, shaving 29 seconds off her previous best to establish a new IU Kokomo freshman 5K record. Her performance also moved her into fifth on the program's all-time performer list, adding another milestone to an impressive debut collegiate season.
The freshman's record-breaking effort comes just one week after she established a new freshman 6K record at the Bradley Pink Classic. Blackburn now owns the program's freshman records at both distances and ranks among the River States Conference's fastest runners this season.
Alysha Crouch was the Cougars' second finisher, placing 48th with a time of 19:42.33. Erica Grubbs followed in 103rd at 20:48.34, providing another important scoring performance for IU Kokomo.
Alexis Sibray recorded one of the team's largest improvements, finishing 110th in 21:05.34 and lowering her personal best by 1 minute, 22 seconds. Keeley Carpenter rounded out the Cougars' scoring five in 113th place with a time of 21:12.84, improving her previous best by 46 seconds.
The personal-best performances extended throughout the lineup, with Kaylee Futrell (21:33.29) improving by 1 minute, 29 seconds, Erabella Winrotte (23:25.34) by 1 minute, 4 seconds, Elly Potts (23:16.24) by 1 minute, 1 second and Kaytlin Moeller (21:32.30) by 50 seconds.
Head coach Josh Colvin praised the team's individual progress while emphasizing the importance of continuing to improve ahead of the conference championships.
"Our women had a pretty good performance. Haley continues to prove that she is the fastest freshman woman in school history by breaking the freshman record that was over 8 years old. She placed herself as the 4th fastest runner in the conference in the 5k and the 2nd fastest in the 6k. Alexis Sibray, Elly Potts, Bella Winrotte, Kaylee Futrell, Kaytlin Moeller, and Keeley Carpenter all ran pr's and you can't ask for much more than that. Erica Grubbs may not have pr'd today but she ran tough and stepped up for us today. We have been ranked 3rd in the conference all season and we dropped to 4th after today so we have some work to do over the next couple of weeks to be ready for conference."
The Cougars will now turn their attention to the River States Conference Championships in two weeks, looking to build on Friday's individual improvements as they prepare for postseason competition.
